INTHEDARKANDOUTOFHARM [ YOU CAN RUN AWAY WITH ME ANY TIME YOU WANT ]
~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ Every nerve ending in Veronica's body tingled. They'd been like that since she climbed into the cab and slammed the door. For various reasons. For one, she'd never been in such a nice car. Lorcan Furey owned a Porsche. And those were the keys Aiden grabbed on his way out the door. And the car he'd invited Veronica to ride in. How many kids could say they rode with one of the best-looking guys in school in a Porsche? That was the fangirl half of her brain, right there. The part that couldn't separate entirely from society and still found material things immensely cool. Then there was the other half of her brain, the half that was focused on her close proximity to one of the best-looking guys in school and the confined-ness of his vehicle. She couldn't scoot any closer the door if she wanted to. Which she didn't, because the odd mixture of nausea, anticipation, and ecstasy coursing through her was an awesome feeling.
... However, that same feeling caused her to mentally whack herself over the head with a sledgehammer. It was only a little drive to the mall. It wasn't like they were off to Vegas to get hitched. Honestly. he internal freak-out couldn't have been more unnecessary. Still, there was something exciting about cutting class to go to the mall with an attractive member of the opposite sex. Not that you could tell by looking at Veronica. She couldn't look anywhere else but straight ahead for fear that if she caught sight of those icy eyes of Aiden's, she'd turn into a stuttering mess. And her personal space issues had her crammed up against the car door, hands clasped together for dear life. ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ words ! 303 tags ! Lorcan still didn't exactly feel at ease around Veronica. She continually flipped moods like a light switch. As he glanced over at her he decided she was in a 'get the eff away from me, you creeper!' mood, seeing as she was squished up against the door(though that may have been because his car was on the small side), clasping her hands together for dear life. A smile crept onto his lips. She was definitely cute. "Sorry about the tight squeeze," he muttered awkwardly. He wondered how he was supposed to interact around her without accidentally flipping her very spastic switch. He may be a man whore but he didn't like making girls uncomfortable for no reason. She was puzzling, always reacting in unimaginable ways. She really threw him off his game. How could he get her to like him if he didn't know what to do? Still, at the moment it was just another conquest; a weird, challenging one, but a conquest nonetheless. She piqued his interest, much like Jennabelle did. Her mystery attracted him as much as her beauty.
Lorcan glanced over toward her again, determined to open her up. "Praying?" He asked, smirking slightly. "If you're that worried about ditching there's a church on the way. You could easily confess your sins before we eat." He was just teasing of course, hoping to get a smile. "Relax, I promise not to bite you." He kept his hands at a perfectly gentlemanly distance, poised delicately atop the wheel. He also kept his eyes on the road, so as to not make her feel as if he was watching her incessantly. "We've got a ways to go before we get to the mall. We can sit here in silence while you calculate jumping out of the car at every stoplight or we can try to be sort of friendly." He looked over at her, sympathetic expression on his face. "I do want to know a bit about you, if that's alright." He went back to watching the road, eyes lazily scanning the traffic. He was going exactly the speed limit, at the most one mile over(it's never a good idea to speed in a Porsche while ditching school to hang at the mall). He had a feeling that she was either afraid of him or too nervous to speak, and watching her like a starving jackal wasn't going to help anything. For some reason girls didn't like that. Go figure. Anyway, Lorcan made sure to keep her from feeling too uncomfortable. Even if he didn't know how to act around her, he knew enough no to creep on her when she was clearly distressed.

~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ Veronica's tension compelled Aiden to apologize for the tight squeeze. Veronica flirted with the notion of letting him know the spacing wasn't the issue, but she realized that could be taken a number of ways, more of them holding negative connotations than positive. She inclined her head to signal that she'd heard him, but kept her lips pressed together, jaw clamped shut. Then Aiden noted Veronica's hands. Veronica could help it -- she laughed. It was a small chuckle, but it left her hoping her companion hadn't noticed the hint of hysteria. "I've never been to church," she admitted, glancing at Aiden from the corners of her eyes. "Not sure they'd like me there." Then he made his quip about not biting, and she chuckled again. God Vee, the voice in her head berated her, I don't think you sound mental enough. You should try harder. Squeezing her eyes shut ('cause that really wasn't borderline insanity), Veronica willed the voice away. When she opened her eyes again, so focused on Aiden. He maintained a gentlemanly distance and kept those gorgeous ice eyes of his on the road. Veronica slumped over a little in her seat. That one glimpse of him was all she needed to relax. As it turned out, her insides were floundering about like a headless chicken because she wouldn't look at Aiden, which brought to mind all these vivid, grotesque images of all that could go wrong. Now that she'd seen he was harmless, she could breathe. I wonder if he knows how perfectly he's handling this, she thought.
Her heart skipped a beat when Aiden turned those soul-piercers on her, but his words brought Veronica back to reality. She was acting like a spastic freak. It was surprising that he hadn't leaped out of the car at the last stoplight. Then again, maybe not. This was his brother's car, and it was expensive. Leaving it with a spastic freak was not the best idea. Shaking the thought, Veronica focused on what Aiden was saying, preparing a response so she wouldn't miss a beat when he finished. Frustrated with her people skills (or rather, lack thereof), she snatched up a fistfull of hair, scratching the top of her head before responding. "I'm sorry." She let her hair go. "I haven't done this in a while, and I'm a little out of shape." Realizing how vague that statement was, she rephrased, "I haven't interacted with people in a while, I mean." Okay. So that sounded a little bit worse than, "I haven't cut school in a while." Maybe, if she were lucky, he'd kick her out of the car and put her out of her misery. Rather than dwell on that, she zeroed in on what he'd said on liking to get to know more about her. That is what most people do on dates, isn't it? she thought. If I can consider this a date... "There you go," she said, stopping that train of thought in its tracks. "I'm socially awkward. What else?" She made a show of tapping her chin in deep thought. "I'd rather live with my uncle than either of my parents, my cousin's a bitch to me even though she owes me her life, and my best friend is a dog." Veronica made a face. "That was too much. At first, Lorcan thought he wasn't getting through to her. She was still clasping her hands so tight that her knuckles were stark against the rest of her skin(and fingernails of course). He was considering taking her back to school, because as cute and hard to catch as she was, he wasn't going to force her to be around him. He wanted to win her affection(among other things) on his own, without force. He wanted his charm to draw her in, his sweet compliments to give her a sense of comfort and safety around him. He wanted her to fall for him the way the others did: of their own accord. Fear was not the way to go. He didn't mind giving her a bit of space before trying again. The rush from girls wasn't the capture, but the chase. His lips were forming the words when a laugh echoed throughout the car, and it wasn't from his own mouth. He chanced a surreptitious glance her way, and noticed she was still in the frightened-please-don't-rape-me position, but the tentative smile on her lips gave him a small flicker of hope. "I've never been to church. I don't think they'd like me there." He was surprised by that. not that he thought she was overly religious, it was just that she didnt' seem the type to be banned from Church. "You know, I'm pretty sure they'd love a pretty girl with a gorgeous smile to attend church." A mischievious smile flickered across his features. "Or... Is it that your preferences aren't exactly appreciated in church?" he smirked. "Because there are some churches that are a little bit more open." he was fighting back a laugh. He wasn't sure she would catch the 'some churches don't like gay people' joke, but he also thought she was definitely smart enough to catch his joking tone and think something was up. She'd laughed again, and a very small part of him, almost completely obscured by stupid, noticed how much he liked her laugh. She didn't laugh the way Jenna laughed, though they were both very hesitant with expressing their amusement. Veronica's laugh reminded him more like the sound of a brook, or maybe the sweetness of the summer breezes the way it would encompass him and make him smile without realizing it. Maybe he pushed the feeling down because he was afraid to be happy, or maybe he really didn't know how much he enjoyed being around her. With Lorcan, everything was a conundrum in and of itself.
Then, out of nowhere, Veronica was apologizing. First a look of astonishment ran across his face, but that was immediately replaced by a skeptical look. She'd said she ws a bit out of shape. He looked over at her, thinking to himself how sexy she looked even curled up in the upright featal position. Her gorgeous body wasn't even the best part about her. Then, she attempted to clarify. "I haven't interacted with people in a while, I mean." As Lorcan slowed to a stop at the stoplight in front of him, he turned to look at Veronica, eyebrow raised. "You. Not talking to people." his skepticism was obvious in every aspect of him: the expression, the tone, even the diction choice. "You're kidding. You're smart, beautiful, and funny, and you think that you're 'out of shape'? Either you're very modest or very silly." he remarked, not in a mocking or judgemental tone, mostly a surprised one. He coudln't fathom any situation in which she was less than great at. The light switched to an annoyingly perky green, and he turned back to the road and continued driving. They were one turn away from the parking lot of the mall, and then they'd be munching on fast food crap(which he secretly enjoyed, especially Panda Express). They'd only been talking for a few minutes, and already he had no idea what was in store for him. He'd never have guessed the magnitude of their first interaction and the power it would hold in later encounters. Silly boy.

~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ In response to her comment about churches, Aiden lathered her with compliments. Gorgeous girl. Beautiful smile. Veronica almost laughed. Fortunately, her people skills weren't so rusty that she went that far. Instead, she settled for biting the corner of her bottom lip. There were other reasons churches wouldn't approve of her. Her style of dress being one. One bible-hugging Jesus freak from school had gone as far as to call her a devil-worshiper. All because she wore fishnets and painted her nails black. Then there was the slightly less obvious reason. Veronica was straight enough that she could cover it up in church, but even sitting there in a pew, seeing all the other guy on girl married couples holding hands, reprimanding the children when they lost interest in the message and started to talk... She felt like an outsider. Especially having heard the one verse, "Man shall not sleep with man". It had been a while since Veronica had been in a relationship, period, but that didn't change the fact that when she looked at some girls, her heart skipped a beat and her mind drifted to less... publicly appropriate places. Aiden interrupted her train of thought... only to send it straight back in the same direction. His tone was light and joking, but Veronica panicked. "How did you know?" she gasped, unable to mitigate the accusatory edge in her voice. Then another stab of horror shot through her as she realized he was probably kidding, completely ignorant of her sexual preferences, and she'd accidentally confessed them to him. Folding her arms across her chest, she sank lower in the seat and averted her gaze. Outside her window, buildings whizzed by in a grayscale blur. "I mean, how do you know? Most of the churchgoers I've crossed paths with are more than a little old-fashioned." She jutted her chin out defensively, hoping he wouldn't question further. But then came the voice in the back of her mind, nagging. What if he'd realized part of her liked girls? What if he automatically assumed she was 100% lesbian and wanted nothing more to do with her? Even though she'd only known him a few minutes, it would hurt to be dropped like yesterday's trash because of a misconception, regardless of who was doing the dropping. Dropping the subject, she realized how socially awkward she was acting and launched into a mono-pology (a cross between a monologue and an apology -- not a legit word).
After that, Aiden remarked in disbelief that she was "smart, beautiful, and funny". Again with the excessive compliments. He was really laying it on thick. Veronica shook her head at his ignorance. She couldn't recall having proven her sense of humor or intelligence yet, and as for beautiful, beauty was in the eye of the beholder. To herself, she wasn't that beautiful, but other people seemed to have a collectively adverse opinion. She guffawed. "You've known me for a grand total of fifteen minutes," she pointed out. "It's a little early in the game for those kinds of statements." Unfolding her arms, she dropped her hands to her lap. Just to prove that she'd relaxed considerably since climbing into the car, she left them untangled. Then they were turning into the Atrium Mall parking lot. Before the car was completely stopped, Veronica unclipped her seatbelt and hopped out of the Porsche. ... Most likely undoing any vision of normalcy Aiden had concocted of her. She didn't know if he'd planned on opening the door for her, and in fact, that thought hadn't occurred to her until just then. She just knew it was cramped and incredibly warm in the car, and temperatures were colder outside. Boy, were they. The second her skin touched air, goosebumps sprang up. A shiver ran through her. Veronica immediately started rubbing her arms. Of course, she'd chosen today of all days to wear short sleeves and skip the sweater. What a stupid thing to do. It was the middle of winter. It was cold. She knew it. ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ ❀ ~ words ! 695 tags ! "aiden" ;] outfit ! same one as last time lyrics ! "summertime" by my chemical romance notes !
